Space Mountain Lights On
The original Space Mountain was built in Florida’s Walt Disney World in 1975. This was the first of five of Walt Disney’s 1959 vision of a “space roller coaster” – an indoor coaster that flies through a concrete and steel mountain in near total darkness. The second, third, fourth and fifth Space Mountains were built in Anaheim, California (Disneyland – 1977), Tokyo Disneyland (1983), Hong Kong Disneyland (2005) and Tokyo Disneyland (2006 rebuild).
The basic premise behind Space Mountain is that the rider can’t see what comes next, thus the excitement of any movement, spin, dip, or climb is magnified many times over. The discombobulated feeling that a Space Mountain traveler feels is squelched by the excitement of the unknown. It’s a bit like driving a car at night with the lights off, but far more safe.
But what if you saw what it really looks like inside? Space Mountain with the lights on? Now you can.
The video was shot during the American Coaster Enthusiasts Coaster Con XXIX and posted by Ryan Subica on YouTube. Not so scary after all!
